I'm willing to bet you won't be hosting a community party in celebration of Fair Housing month. I know of few other laws that cause as much perspiration and hyperventilation in the multifamily industry as the Fair Housing Act. Not usually because we are blatant violators, but because we've heard stories or have been threatened by an angry resident or feel generally out of control because there are fifty other priorities demanding our attention.
Perhaps that is just the reason to give Fair Housing some thought this month. For instance, consider ensuring that your staff has up-to-date training on the topic. Or, take some time with your staff to celebrate successes and consider ways to improve. At the very least, it may be a good time to read a bit about the fight for this act and the reasons it matters. It can be easy to forget, in the coldness of business, that human lives are in the balance. Nelson Mandela said, "To deny people their human rights is to challenge their very humanity." May we not lose our humanity in the midst of our need for growth and sustainability.
How do you navigate the tension of business need and basic humanity? Do you tend to err more on the side of business or compassion? Who has been a mentor or example to you in this arena?
